Pakistan cricket team survived a mighty scare In the Match 36 of ICC World Cup 2019 to continue its surge towards the World Cup semifinals with Imad Wasim scoring 49 not out showing nerves of steel to guide them to a tense three-wicket win over Afghanistan at The Headingley in Leeds on Saturday.
In heart-stopping action, gritty Afghanistan came within touching distance of creating a big upset but was denied by Wasim, who emerged an unlikely batting hero along with Wahab Riaz who played a crucial knock off 15 runs off 9 balls, who hit a timely six off Rashid Khan to release the pressure.
Wasim had five half-centuries before this match but perhaps played the biggest knock of his life, soaking in tremendous pressure as Pakistan won with two deliveries to spare.
Afghanistan after dominating the large part of the Pakistan innings, gave in under pressure, missed run outs and catches towards the dramatic end. They had come close to defeating India too but fell short.
The Afghanistan spinners turned the match on its head by reducing Pakistan to 156 for six and the modest 228-run target was looked like a mountain to scale for the former World Cup Champs.
It was Mohammed Nabi(2/23) and Mujeeb ur Rahman (2/34) who saw off the Pakistan top-order to set it up nicely for Afghanistan.
Afghanistan Spinner Rashid Khan got rid of Haris Sohail for 27 and Pakistan skipper got run out when he was at 18. Afghan skipper Gulbadin decision to bowl at the 46th over backfired and he ended up leaking 18 runs with Wasim finding three boundaries in that over.
With 16 runs required off the last 12 balls, Wahab Riaz launched Rashid for a massive six in the second ball and eventually Pakistan needed just six runs from the last over.
Gulabdin brought himself again into the attack but Wasim steered him for a four in the fourth ball of the over to finish the game for his side. With this win, Pakistan now has nine points and has jumped to the fourth spot, pushing the hosts England to five. They would pray for India to beat England On Sunday to enhance Pakistan's chances of making it to the semifinals.
Pakistan next plays Bangladesh Friday, July 5 at Lord's, London.
